Therapy For Teens And Young Adults
Should teens or young adults go to therapy for their problems?
The team at Key Insights Counseling know that those years as a teen and early adult are incredibly important.
Teens must quickly learn to adapt to new stressors as they prepare to launch into adulthood. Young adults must make significant life choices about their career, education, and relationships. All sorts of major changes are happening all at once as teens and young adults transition into new roles and responsibilities – and it’s no wonder why many of them struggle.
And as much as we would like to see them succeed, many teens and young adults face emotional and psychological hardship.
If you are wondering if your teen is struggling, here are a few red flags to look for:
Anxiety and depression are common in teens and also for young adults - therapy can help them overcome these issues. If they are showing any of these warning signs, we are here for you!
Here at Key Insights Counseling, we offer outstanding therapy services for children, teens, and adults from all over Rohnert Park, Cotati, Sebastopol, Santa Rosa, Penngrove, and Petaluma because we believe everyone deserves a chance at wellbeing.

How will therapy for teens and young adults help?
Therapy for teens and young adults is designed to do three main things:
Teens and young adults deeply value privacy. Therapy provides a safe, private, and neutral space where teens can talk about issues freely and without worry about other people – especially their parents – might think. This allows them the freedom to speak their mind and wholly benefit from the therapy process in a way that is unique to psychotherapy. Over time, this can promote the level of sharing and social engagement that happens outside the therapy office.
Therapy also helps identify the problem, which often includes providing an accurate diagnosis. Diagnoses are simply descriptions that clinicians use to tailor treatment to the specific needs of the person, as therapy for anxiety may look different from therapy for traumatic life events. Teens and young adults also tend to struggle with unique developmental issues related to their age and stage in life, and so therapy helps answer some of those questions. Therapy for young adults and teens provides opportunities to drill down and understand whatever is contributing to their issues so that you can begin to do things differently.
Finally, therapy is all about finding effective solutions to those problems. Teens and young adults get to discover new (and healthy) coping strategies for life’s many stressors when they go to counseling. They also develop awareness of themselves and others – which makes them more effective at what they do outside the therapy office. Most importantly, they develop confidence in their ability to handle future issues as budding adults.
This is why therapy is so incredibly effective for issues such as:
Teen drug and alcohol abuse
Risky behaviors
Angry or defiant teens
Arguing with parents
Depression
Anxiety
ADHD
School issues (poor performance, truancy, drop out, bullying)
Self-harm or cutting
Screen use, social media, and video game addiction
Sexual, physical, and/or emotional trauma
Additionally, counseling is particularly useful for young adults who might be dealing with:
Homesickness
Feeling lost, confused, or unsure what career path to follow
Peer issues and rejection
Drug and alcohol use
Poor academic performance
Social anxiety or poor social skills
Therapy can help tackle many of life’s issues for teens and young adults.

What does therapy look like at Key Insights Counseling?
We are here are to support you through therapy for teens and young adults.
Our team of individual and family therapists offer a wide range of services to help meet your needs effectively and efficiently. Our services are designed to incorporate the latest research while offering strategic, compassionate and solution-focused treatment. The initial session is called the “intake interview,” which involves a thorough review of their developmental history and current situation. This allows our young adult and teen therapists to accurately pinpoint the problem and collaborate on a plan moving forward. From there, we meet for regular individual and/or family counseling to get your teen or young adult moving closer to wellness and success.
As they engage in therapy, they will begin to learn how to:
Make adult decisions
Use effective coping strategies
Regulate emotions and manage stress
Develop advanced social skills
Feel confident and in control
Launch from “the nest” and thrive
